David Bowie

“David”

David Bowie is another one of those musicians who’ve been highly requested over the years. I’d considered painting David in the summer of 2015, thought about it again on his January 8th birthday, and then, we suddenly lost him 2 days later.

After a couple of months of thinking of the correct way to portray him, I happened to see a very inspirational image by photographer Ken Settle in a music magazine, and with Ken’s permission, created what has become a very moving painting, and one of my favorites.

David Bowie was an English singer, songwriter, actor and record producer born in South London’s Brixton neighborhood on January 8, 1947. His first hit was the song “Space Oddity” in 1969. The original pop chameleon, Bowie became a fantastical sci-fi character for his breakout Ziggy Stardust album. He was a figure in popular music for over five decades, considered by critics and musicians as an innovator, particularly for his work in the 1970s. He later co-wrote “Fame” with Carlos Alomar and John Lennon which became his first American No. 1 single in 1975. His career was marked by reinvention and visual presentation, his music and stagecraft significantly impacting popular music. During his lifetime, his record sales are estimated at 140 million worldwide, making him one of the world’s best-selling music artists. In the UK, he was awarded nine platinum album certifications, eleven gold and eight silver, and released eleven number-one albums. In the US, he received five platinum and seven gold certifications.

An accomplished actor, David Bowie starred in The Man Who Fell to Earth in 1976. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. He stopped concert touring after 2004 and his last live performance was at a charity event in 2006. In 2013, Bowie returned from a decade-long recording hiatus and remained musically active until his death on January 10, 2016 from cancer at the age of 69, just two days after the release of his final album, Blackstar.

I hope you like the painting. The high quality prints offered here are stunning.
