Billy Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart

“The Dead Beat”

Finally, the driving force behind the Grateful Dead came together in this painting… The Dead Beat, featuring Billy Kreutzmann & Mickey Hart.

Billy Kreutzmann, born May 7, 1946 is an American drummer who played with the band for their entire career. He also plays with his own bands BK3, 7 Walkers and Billy & the Kids. Kreutzmann started playing drums at the age of 13. Near the end of 1964 he co-founded the band The Warlocks, along with Phil Lesh, Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, and Ron “Pigpen” McKernan. In November 1965, the Warlocks became the Grateful Dead.

Mickey Hart, born September 11, 1943 is an American percussionist and musicologist. He is best known as one of the two drummers of the band. He was a member of the Grateful Dead from September 1967 to February 1971 and from October 1974 to August 1995. He and Billy earned the nickname “the rhythm devils”. Alongside his work with the Grateful Dead, Hart has flourished as a solo artist, percussionist, and the author of several books. In these endeavors he has pursued a lifelong interest in ethnomusicology and in world music.

Together these two laid the groundwork for the Grateful Dead to play over…thus the appropriate title…The Dead Beat.

Billy would drive the beat and Mickey provided the ‘color’. The Dead just liked to have options for polyrhythmic arrangements and syncopation.  “Life is good when the rhythm is right!!”

It was great seeing Billy Kreuztmann & Mickey Hart tear it up at the Grateful Dead 50th Anniversary Fare Thee Well shows in Santa Clara & Chicago along with Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Trey Anastasio, Jeff Chimenti and Bruce Hornsby. Together they put together a show that no-one present will ever forget.
